In this episode of NBC News Now’s Mental Health Check, we are digging into a recent study that found an alarming trend for moms in the United States. Research published in the Journal of American Medical Association found that the mental health of mothers dropped significantly from 2016 to 2023 with 38% of moms reporting excellent mental health in 2016, compared to only 25% seven years later.

Currently, 1 in 12 moms are reporting poor mental health, and the women that are being most impacted are those that are single parents, not as educated, or have kids on Medicaid or are uninsured.

Clinical psychologist, Dr. Jennifer Hartstein of Hartstein Psychological Services, joins NBC News to discuss more details of what the study found and some factors that may be contributing to this significant decline.
