A viral challenge on the wildly popular app, TikTok, is putting toddlers to the test using one of their favorite sweet treats—cookies.

The #CookieChallenge is showing little ones faced with an ethical dilemma—they get two cookies and one of their parents gets none. For some, it’s an impossible decision, devastation that someone may be missing out, quickly remedied by a sweet gesture and showing parents tickled and sometimes relieved by their little ones’ generosity. While other kids are delighted with a double helping, wasting no time eating it all up, but with a little nudge, they usually rise to the occasion.

Clinical and family psychologist, Dr. Jennifer Hartstein of Hartstein Psychological Services, joins NBC News Now’s Mental Health Check to discuss what these decisions mean and is this a true measure of a child’s empathy.
